Top Ten Tuesday: April 30

Since I love lists I've decided to start doing Top Ten Tuesday hosted over at the Broke and Bookish! This week's theme is words or topics that make me instantly want to pick up a book.

#1: Romance- I'm not going to lie, the number one thing that entices me to pick up a book is a good romance. If there isn't a hot guy involved I want no part of it! But really, romance is what makes or breaks a novel in my opinion.

#2: Werewolves - As dumb as it sounds I ADORE werewolf books. I don't know why but if there is a werewolf involved it's pretty much automatically on my to-read list.

#3: Characters who have had hard lives - It's a sad fact that happy circumstances don't make for good stories. The bigger the sob story the more likely I am to read it, I know it sounds awful but we all know it's true.

#4: Characters who start out hating each other then fall in love later - Pretty self-explanatory, I just LOVE IT.

#5: Books set in my state - Every time I see a book set in Oregon I always feel compelled to read it. Sometimes I just have to laugh at some of the descriptions from authors who have never been here (the Oregon coast is not warm or sandy, just saying!)

#6: Steampunk - I adore steampunk, it's pretty much the best of both worlds.

#7: The Salem Witch Trials - It is a testament to my nerdiness that I have a favorite period in history and this one is it. This whole mess is so fascinating and I love the chance to learn more about it.

#8: Murder Mysteries - I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden and that slowly escalated into loving murder mysteries, I don't read nearly as many mysteries as I want to!

#9: Small Town setting - Being a city girl myself I love getting the perspective of a small town life. I don't think I would ever want to live in one, but its fun to read about.

#10: Settings in a foreign country - I have a huge love of travel so any book set in another country is always on my TBR list!

What are some themes or words that make you pick up a book?

  1. I’m all for books set in small towns and foreign countries. And I love books that start out with romance where characters hate each other. Salem witch trials — absolutely!! Anything historically fictional is good for me. ;)

  2. Did you read the Shiver books (Maggie Stiefvater)? I actually enjoyed them quite a bit... Not five stars in my opinion, but definitely a solid 4.

  3. Ahh sounds like we have a really similar taste in reading! :) I've always loved historical fiction, I need to start reading it again.

  4. I read the first one right when it came out (about 3 or 4 years ago I believe?) but I never continued with the series. I should go back and give that one another shot!
